★★★★1/2

This author was someone new for me so I was a little hesitate about reading the book. When I saw the cover I was taken back because it’s not like any of the other covers on the books I usually read. The cover did have a calming feeling when you looked at it. It gives the illusion that I should be on vacation to an exotic island or on a beach while reading this book.
Let me say this: this book was far from anything that I typically read and I loved it because of that. The author’s style of writing was different from anything that I have read before and it flowed so well. Reading the book put me at ease and I felt like the characters were right in front of me talking. I felt like I was literally pulled into the story with the characters. I haven’t felt like that in a long time and I absolutely loved it.
There was a few mistakes with the editing but it wasn’t anything that would cause my reading to be interrupted. The only reason that I noticed the mistakes is because I am an editor. This is the reason 1/2 star was deducted. The editing mistakes was small things like missing the word it, to or the. But your brain automatically corrects the missing so you an don’t realize it’s  not there.

I liked that this story touched on various subjects that lots of authors refuse to write about because they're too controversial. The subjects of abortion and religion were discussed. I liked that the author showed that the drug, Allegra, causes a hearing impairment which is another subject not touched on.
The book ended with a cliffhanger that had me wondering who was at the door and what happened next. There will definitely be a part two and I will be reading it asap. Great job Joy Elan!

Life Is A Canvas edition by Joy Elan Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

While some people wait and wish for their dreams to come knocking at their front door, strong-willed trailblazers, like 23 year old Allegra Johnson seem to find joy and pleasure in putting forth the necessary work to make their dreams a reality, well, at least the aspects that are within their own control. Allegra’s possessions and accomplishments are all a result of her hard work and dedication; her degree, her home...but - there’s one thing that money and success can’t buy, and that is true love. In spite of this, business-minded Allegra isn’t desperate one bit! In fact, one of the key themes surrounding this book arises throughout the story more than once in the form of these questions, “Why aren’t you married?” or “Why aren’t you taken?”, imposing the idea that she is much too ideal of a woman to be single. Surely, she is the full package, but before we dig further into this, let's go back to the beginning.

The story starts with Allegra and her best friend of 9 years, Leelah, discussing their futures and aspirations for the upcoming new year, 2007. Allegra, an ageless, attractive, and already successful young woman is depicted as strong, intelligent, optimistic, and extremely independent! She is calculated in every move that she makes and is not the type of woman that just wakes up in the morning and lives life on accident. No way. And with a masters degree from Stanford and being a graduate of UC Berkeley, it’s easy to see why her confidence is at an all time high! As a reader, you wonder, how much more successful can she get?

Well, after she expresses to Leelah of how important it is for her to fulfill her purpose in life (which doesn’t consist of a 9 AM-5 PM), she reveals her epic plan to initiate her own business, inspired by her indigenous passion and zeal for music and vision to build a company that provides growth and opportunity in the arts & music realm. Seeing that she is well-established and mentally capable, she has mostly all of what it takes to accomplish her goal, except there is one thing she needs to put it all into action - money, a very large amount of money. So to get the ball rolling she applies for a grant to help fund her proposal. In celebration of the two young ladies accomplishments, friendship, and evolution, Allegra and Leelah sojourn in Europe for a few weeks, having fun, partying, while enjoying foreign exotic dishes while examining their prosperous lives.

We loved the fact that the author included scenes in the story like this that illustrated and magnified the importance and meaning of friendship, a primary theme noticeable throughout the story. Both young women, though very different with contrasting views, also share several similarities. Particularly, their wit, will to want more, and animated exuberance for life. In addition to this, we could never forget the crazy humor they both brought to the table! Admittedly, there were several parts throughout the story that literally forced you to burst into laughter. Elan’s choice in combining Allegra and Leelah’s prestigious mindsets with vivacious outgoing personalities was definitely a good move, it gave the book a realistic down-to-earth feel that provided a practical connection for the reader.

Moving towards a rising point in the storyline, in the midst of the two overachievers partying like rock stars and admiring some of Europe’s most famous art, Allegra finally receives the news that pushes her right into the hands of her destiny; the seven hundred and fifty thousand dollar grant to start up her new business that she applied for before leaving for her trip, gets approved! Now that she has walked clear through the door of opportunity (in stilettos and style!), it’s full force business and time to get everything in order for her new club, Maine Attraction! To our surprise, one of the characters that had appeared earlier in the story very briefly, Jeremiah Anderson, turns out to be one of her new, handsome, business clients.

Allegra’s last words to him then were; “What? See something you like?”, in an almost flirtatious and haughty manner. Subconsciously, she knew she was attracted to this suave mystery man, which she nicknames, ‘Marvin’; for in her eyes, he is rather charming and seemingly decent. Nonetheless, regardless of their previous encounter...and Allegra's unspoken feelings, she maintains a “strictly business” demeanor; but fate has a way of presenting opportunities that are just much too hard to resist, let alone ignore!

More than Friendship
Hearts on The Line

After receiving an unexpected phone call from Jeremiah one evening, Allegra and Jeremiah meet at a restaurant where he finally confesses his romantic attraction to her. In no time at all, their “business” relationship easily becomes entangled with the intense passion and adventure of pleasure. Now, from an abstract perspective, this particular scene of the life canvas could be painted in a vast array of deep red shades with highlights and hues of green, symbolizing the ardorous (passion) atmosphere that is in alignment with their successes (money). It is hard not to wonder, could Jeremiah be the icing to her three-tiered layered silk cake? We'll, could he?

As the story progresses, it is apparent that the chemistry between Jeremiah and Allegra is undeniable, as they can barely keep their hands off one another, falling deeper and deeper into the profound depths of intimacy. Howbeit, with Jeremiah's busy on-the-road music career and Allegra’s new business and guarded heart, their newfangled blooming romance is much more vulnerable than ever.

While Jeremiah goes away for business, Allegra is approached by an ex that she has absolutely no interest in, even though he is eagerly and avidly persistent, inciting the idea of possibly restoring what they “once had”. Nevertheless, in spite of his persistence, the only thing Allegra can see when she looks at him is the unborn child she aborted and how he only appears to be interested in her now due to her recent success with the business. The return of her true interest, Mr. Jeremiah, quickly dissolves the shadows of her lingering obnoxious ex. But when Jeremiah accuses Allegra of being a liar after she attempts to tell him of some very important information, his and her passionate connection is inflicted by confliction, and in the blink of an eye, she is on a new business/personal date with a handsome man named, Paris

After an enriching conversation and some really great wine, Paris and Allegra make plans to go to a Vineyard and she has still heard nothing from Jeremiah. Nonetheless, meeting Paris appeared to be the perfect motivation in helping her disremember the annoying disagreement her and Jeremiah had previously. Later on that day, while Allegra is in her hotel room, suddenly, there is a knock on her door. She opens it and there is a person standing in front of her in which the story never confirms the identity. Total teaser! But, the utter disbelief imprinted all over Allegra’s face that is described at the end of this saga clearly illustrates the dramatic shock she is in when face-to-face with this mysterious individual!

Ultimately, you are left at the edge of the cliff once you get to the end of this novel, wondering, who it could be. Allegra leaves you with one main clue when she says; “How did you know I was here?”, inciting that the person standing at the door, whom is also described as holding flowers, wasn’t supposed to know where she was. So, who was it and how did they know where Allegra was? Truthfully, with all of the numerous interactions she has had throughout the story with various individuals, it could be anyone - and we are amped to read a sequel to this edition to continue where this journey left off! Allegra's tale is a great portrait of a successful young woman who has many options in life, isn’t afraid to set high expectations for herself, nor willing to settle for just anything when it comes to her romantic life, and who could blame her? She speaks for a lot of hard-working, motivated, and successful women in our everyday society. oreover, her quest to strengthen her spirituality and develop a more solid relationship with God ultimately empowers her to surpass all boundaries of doubt, providing a well-rounded view of her character and innerself.

The hints of suspense and mystery, like the unknown unexpected visitor at the end of the story emphasize the unpredictabilities in life and support the theory that there are aspects of life which are far beyond our control...like finding the perfect person that you can imagine spending each and every day with - or having someone find you when you least expect it! Either way, this story’s intricate and detailed plot of success, friendship, and romance tells us that we are the artists of our own lives, and each day is like a canvas, in which we decorate it’s face with the multi colors of all our emotions and life changes, sublimely painting the scenes that will forever stain eternal imprints upon our hearts, and inevitably the world.

We rate this book 5 Stars - Author Joy Elan’s; Life Is A Canvas, takes you on a adventurous enthralling journey that inspires and encourages the bond of friendship, dreams, and romance!

My friend, my sista, one of my favorite humans the lovely Joy Elan has already self published four amazing books of poetry and essays. This is her first novel. WOW!!! I knew that Joy was an epic writer but this book rocks!!! Its deep, its detailed, its fun, it takes you on a ride. You feel invested in the characters and the story. You feel like you know the Allegra and Leelah and the other characters in this story. Joy shows hella Bay Area pride in this novel but brings in everyone. She paints the Bay Area experience for a larger crowd. All her work is also a beautiful positive representation of women of color. Get this book!!!!
Joy Elan has proved that she is much more that just an Award Winning Poet with the release of her latest book "Life Is A Canvas". Her readers and fans were patiently waiting on this book and she has done a fantastic job. The story line is seamless and the characters are well rounded.

In my honest opinion this book is magnificently written and will only open new doors for this young talented and gifted Poet /Author.
This was an interesting story that included a lot of things not often touched on in books unless it is the main focus. For example, Allegra is hearing impaired which is not a major part of the story, but is simply a part of the character's build. Various topics such as religion and abortion are touched on and the deep relationship with her best friend Leelah is highlighted. Later on, Allegra's romantic life starts to pick up as she starts to build her company and there are a few trials and tribulations she's faced with. In the end, we're left wondering where her love life will lead her and who was at the door when she opened it. Was it Paris? Jeremiah? Or someone else. I guess we'll have to look for a sequel to find out.
